Friday Update - January 12, 2018



This year Student-Led Conferences will take place on Friday,​ ​January​ ​26,​ ​2018​ ​between 9:00 am - 5:00 pm. Parents and guardians are expected to sign up for a specific time using our OnVolunteer system.  Please click on this link, to access OnVolunteer.

​ ​We are continuing to work on empowering your children to take responsibility for their learning and thus, Student-Led Conferences will be led by your child. On this day your child is expected to be in complete​ ​uniform.​ Please note that there is NO REGULAR SCHOOL that day.  If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact the school office at 604-589-7545 or

Christmas Concert DVD available

This year families have the opportunity to purchase a DVD copy of our December Christmas Concert:  The First Story of Christmas for $10.00 (CHEQUE made payable to St. Matthew's Elementary School).

If you are interested please email ( or call (604-589-7545) our school office no later than, Friday, January 19, 2018 and let Ms. Rossi know your name, your child's grade and the number of copies you would like.

Non-Uniform Day - Tacky Tourist!

This upcoming Wednesday, January 17, 2018 is "Tacky Tourist Day".  Students are encouraged to wear items like:

• Sunglasses

• Hats

• Hawaiian shirts

• Summer t-shirts

• Khaki pants

• Colourful socks

• Shorts

• Sandals

Those student who dress up are asked to bring a non-perishable item for the St. Matthew's St. Vincent de Paul Society.  Students who do not dress up are required to wear their complete school uniform.  Thank you!

School Assembly - Friday, January 19, 2018

Our next school assembly will be this upcoming Friday, January 19, 2018 and led by our Grade 6 class.   There has been a CHANGE to the start time of this assembly.  It will begin at 11:30 am.  This is to accommodate the schedule of Archbishop Miller who will be visiting the school and parish on Friday.  All family members and parishioners are most welcome to attend this assembly.  Thank you.

Events and Fundraising Survey

If you have not had an opportunity to do so, please fill out the Events and Fundraising Survey that was sent out on Wednesday, January 3, 2018.  It is a short survey that will not take more than 5 minutes and will help inform planning for the 2018-2019 school year.  Thank you to those parents who have already filled out to the survey.

Attention Grade 7 Parents and Students:

Holy Cross Open House

January 25, 2018 


Holy Cross Regional Secondary will be hosting an Open House Thursday, January 25th, 2018 from 6:00 – 8:30 pm. You are invited to join the Holy Cross community and see the school in action. Enjoy Band/Choir performances, Science experiments, participate in a French Café, savour the complimentary sweets and coffee from our Home Economics Department and meet and greet with Holy Cross’ teachers and students. Holy Cross’ administrative staff will be accepting applications for new students applying for the 2018/2019 school year during the evening. Mark this date on your calendar and plan to be a part of this event. Holy Cross Regional Secondary is located at 16193 88th Avenue (right across the parking lot!)


JANUARY 30, 2018

Most people experience anxiety at some point in their lives however, dealing with the symptoms of anxiety can sometimes be overwhelming, especially as a child.  Whether your child gets anxious over tests, performing in front of an audience or making friends, all children can benefit from learning tools and strategies to help them cope with anxiety.   Dr. Mandy Chen, a registered psychologist with Southpoint Development Clinic will be offering a workshop for parents, details are below:

Highlights of the Talk:

• How do we understand anxiety

• How does anxiety present itself in children

• What are some concrete strategies to deal with anxiety in our kids

Uniform Reminders

Please note that students are expected to come to school in full and proper uniform each day.  This includes proper footwear (black dress shoes), socks (navy) and school sweater.  Girls are permitted to wear tights or leotards  (navy) in colour.  Those students not wearing the school uniform correctly will be sent home with a note. 

Please take some time to review the uniform expectations below: 


• Navy dress pants (double knee). No cords, cotton pants or jeans.

• White polo shirt (purchased through Neat Uniforms)

• Navy socks with black dress shoes. No runners.

• Pull-over sweater or v-neck vest (purchased through Neat Uniforms)


• Tartan tunic (Primary), not more than 3” above the knee or 1” below the knee. (purchased through Neat Uniforms)

• Kilts (Intermediate) not more than 3” above the knee or 1” below the knee. (purchased through Neat Uniforms)

• White polo shirt. (purchased through Neat Uniforms)

• Navy knee-high socks or navy tights or leotards.

Black dress shoes (heels no higher than 1 inch and no ankle boots).

• School cardigan sweater (purchased through Neat Uniforms).

Pancake Breakfast

Please join the school in welcoming 2018 at the first Pancake Breakfast of the year!  Enjoy a delicious complete breakfast with family and friends, while supporting the school's fundraising efforts.  Breakfast will be served after each morning Mass on Sunday, January 21, 2018 in the school gym.  Tickets are $5/person, or $20/family of 5.  We hope to see you there!


2018-2019 Application Forms - New Families

Any new family wishing to apply to St. Matthew's Elementary School for the 2018-2019 school year will have the opportunity to pick up an application form from the school office now.

Completed forms are expected to be returned no later than:  Wednesday, January 17, 2018 at 3:00 pm.

Current families please note that re-registration forms will be given out at the end of our Annual General Meeting (AGM) on Thursday, February 22, 2018.
