Friday Update

October 1, 2021
Dear St. Matthew’s Elementary School Families,
Today we celebrated the iconic Canadian, Terry Fox.  Mr. Durante, our PE teacher, led the entire school in an assembly that focused on Terry’s life and his legacy.  Then each class had a window of time this morning to run (or walk) their best to not only honour Terry Fox but, to also raise money for cancer awareness.  Thank you for all your support!

We are also entering into the month of October; this month is dedicated to the most Holy Rosary.  Families are encouraged to pray together a decade of the rosary (10 Hail Marys) as a morning or evening prayer.

Sincerely in Christ,
Miss Welsh

NEWS FOR THIS WEEK

MASKS REQUIRED FOR STUDENTS IN KINDERGARTEN, GRADE ONE, GRADE TWO AND GRADE THREE

As per our Provincial Health Officer and Ministry of Health’s directive this morning, all students are now required to wear masks indoors while at school.  Please see below for more details:

Earlier today, Education Minister Jennifer Whiteside and Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry announced updates to the Public Health Communicable Disease Guidance for K-12 Schools and the Provincial COVID-19 Communicable Disease Guidelines for K-12 Settings to require masks for kindergarten to Grade 3 students. The rollout will begin on Monday, October 4 when all students in B.C. schools will be required to wear a mask when inside a school building, including while at their desks and on buses. This measure builds on the existing guidelines that currently apply to all students in Grades 4 to 12.

SAFE HAVEN SUNDAY

SUNDAY, OCTOBER 3, 2021

Safe Haven Sunday is a weekend set aside by the Archdiocese of Vancouver and parishes to directly address the harms of sexualized content and pornography in an appropriate way. Within the context of the Mass, parishes are able to provide teaching and resources that will support and protect individuals, marriages and families in making all homes a safe haven.

It is inspired by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops’ formal statement Create in Me a Clean Heart: A Pastoral Response to Pornography, where they explain, “The use of pornography by anyone in the home deprives the home of its role as a safe haven and has a negative effect throughout a family’s life and across generations.”

Safe Haven Sunday will take place this Sunday, October 3, 2021.

Today each school family will receive a copy of EQUIPPED: Smart Catholic Parenting in a Sexualized Culture.  We hope this resource helps you as you navigate this particularly challenging aspect of parenting.

Please note that the “Join by Text” code that is on cover of the Equipped booklet does not work within Canada.  Parents can still sign up for the 7 day e-mail challenge by going to the following website:https://learn.covenanteyes.com/challenge-equipped/

IT’S KRISPY KREME TIME AT ST. MATTHEW’S

You’ll notice that a Krispy Kreme Donut order form has returned home with your child today. As our school will be present at the morning Masses on Sunday, October 17, 2021 we wanted to do something extra special and fun to add to the enjoyment and celebration of the day and to contribute to some awesome fundraising for our school.

If you fill in and return your form by Friday, October 8, 2021 we will order donuts for you to pick up from the Parish on the morning of October 17,2021. Thank you in advance for your support; this fundraiser always yields a nice return for the school and this year, we will be allocating the funds to technology needs and upgrades for our kids.  Don’t see the form in your child’s backpack?  Click HERE to access a copy!
