Social Recreation

Tuesday and Thursday

Social Recreation is a program offered two days a week on Tuesday and Thursday. It is designed as introduction to preschool. Children must be 3 years old by December 31 of the current school year and must be fully toilet trained.

The focus will be hands-on activities including crafts, circle/group time, storytelling, fine arts and exploration.The classroom is divided into four (4) different areas that helps/aids to meet the developmental needs of the children. These areas are as follow:

Math and Science

Most young children are able to automatically count through numbers but understanding these concepts might be challenging to others. At this stage, children use concrete mathematic materials to have a real understanding of numbers up to ten. Once they are ready, then sandpaper or motor numbers are used to associate the symbol and the quantity.

The children are also introduced to nature and how we care for it. We talk about plants, animals, seasons or weather and health. This is done through games, experiments, observing what is going on during the different seasons, storytelling and taking the children outside or for walks to see the changes throughout the year.

Language and Sensorial

In this area children build a strong foundation in oral language together with the use of their sensorial impressions. This is done through conversation, singing songs, finger plays, storytelling, show and tell and games.

To start off children play games, match different objects, name the objects, and describe the difference between or among the objects/materials. Then, we introduce sound games to help the children identify the phonetic sound of letters. Once the children know the phonetic sound we then introduce the letters using the tactile letters, and they begin tracing the letters. In this way it prepares the children’s hand for writing in the future.

Part of this area is grace and courtesy where children are able to communicate and take part in every activity emphasising the use of polite words to develop values and attitudes in the proper Catholic way. Children are also introduced to different customs and traditions and to the globe (countries and continents). Being in a multi-cultural country, we have celebrations such as Christmas, Chinese New Year, St. Patrick’s Day and more.

Music and Art

Children have freedom to express themselves through music and art. They are introduced to the various forms of art using crayons, markers, paint, glue and scissors. Generally, children love music and they enjoy singing songs, do finger plays and make a lot of movements.

Faith Corner

This area is like “God’s House” in the classroom. Children learn how to make the Sign of the Cross, how and when to genuflect, how to carry objects such as candles and flowers gracefully. They are taught how to participate and take part in the Holy Mass. Children learn from doing so all these things are being shown and done.

At this stage, children are learning so much about their world. The outdoor and special activities are tools to help them better explore and enjoy their world. During the year we go on field trips to enhance their curiosity,understanding and to associate the things they learn in the classroom to the outside world. We also encourage family members to be involved in the classroom and take part in special activities.
